Alan Bugos Alan R. Bugos, Vice President, Advanced Technology & Engineering

Alan is responsible for evaluating advanced technologies that are likely to provide opportunities for iBasis to enhance its services and market position, and to coordinate the technical efforts needed to bring new capabilities to production.

Alan brings to iBasis over 17 years of hands-on experience in telecommunications, optical networking, data networking, and communications systems integration. Formerly, he was a Department Manager at GTE Internetworking's IP Telecom Group working on the development and deployment of VoIP and IP Telephony services for GTE's (now Genuity) GNI IP backbone. Prior to GTE Internetworking, Alan was a Principal Member of Technical Staff at GTE Laboratories, focusing on high-speed multi-gigabit optical network design, "real-time" IP multimedia networking, data networking techniques, and DSL and xDSL for Internet services, and advanced voice/video technologies.

He was the recipient of GTE's highest technical merit award, the Warner Award for Technical Achievement in pioneering DSL data networks in 1997. He has published over 45 technical publications, including a published laboratory manual for laser and electro-optics laboratory experiments, holds one DSL patent as co-inventor, and is a frequent speaker at technical conferences such as VON, IEC, and other IP Telephony, IP/PSTN conferences. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Alan received a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics and an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and continued postgraduate study at Tufts University. In between college degrees, Alan spent two years in the U.S. Peace Corps, serving in the Fiji Islands as a science/math educator and rural technology developer completing village water supply projects and photovoltaic power systems. In the past, Alan has worked as a technical consultant to various research centers including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and has taught laboratory and classroom courses on fiber optics and electro-optics technology at the University of Tennessee and various technical colleges. Additionally, Alan is a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor and participates in search and rescue missions through the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
