iBasis Announces Major VoIP Network Expansion in Europe; Names New Regional Vice President to Drive European Operations

Former Teleglobe and FLAG Telecom Executive Tim Walsh to Head Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa; Company Opens Regional Headquarters in London

LONDON, October 2, 2000-iBasis, Inc. (Nasdaq: IBAS), the leader in advanced Internet-based communications, today announced plans to more than triple the number of Internet Central Offices in Europe as part of an aggressive plan to expand its market presence and services in the region. The company also announced that Tim Walsh, a former Teleglobe and FLAG Telecom executive, will lead the company's regional expansion as vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Walsh will be based in the company's new regional headquarters in London.

iBasis already provides IP-based services to more than 100 international providers, including 11of the top 12 US international carriers*, 10 of the top 20 global carriers* and has established carrier-class Internet Central OfficeTM facilities in several major European hubs, including London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. The company is accelerating its service expansion in Europe with deployments of Internet Central Offices in Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Stockholm and Zurich expected by the end of this year. iBasis currently provides its toll-quality international services to 13 European carrier customers, including several tier-one providers.

Tim Walsh brings 19 years of communications experience to iBasis. At Teleglobe Europe, Tim helped launch the company's USA-Europe video-on-fibre network and secure significant communications contracts from major European broadcasters and tier-one telecoms. While at FLAG Telecom, Tim led the expansion of the company's submarine fibre wholesale business. Prior to FLAG, Walsh held senior managerial positions at British Aerospace Communications and Vyvx International, a video-on-fibre subsidiary of Williams Communications.
