Company's Regulatory Expert to Discuss Policy Trends, Company's VoIP Leadership in China
WASHINGTON, D.C. - May 13, 2002 - iBasis, Inc., (Nasdaq: IBAS), the leader in Internet-based voice communications, today announced that it has been invited to address the China Telecom WTO and Policy Forum, held here. Representing iBasis will be the company's vice president for Business Affairs, Jonathan Draluck. Mr. Draluck, an expert on telecommunications regulation, will discuss policy trends toward Voice-over-Internet-Prototcol (VoIP) in China and elsewhere and cite the factors that have led to iBasis' success as a leader in international Internet telephony in China.
The China Telecom WTO and Policy Forum on Tuesday, May 14, will assess the effects on the telecom sector of China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and offer an overview of latest changes in Chinese telecom regulations and policy. Leading experts from government, business and academia will address attendees and outline successful strategies for approaching the China telecom market. More information about the China Telecom WTO and Policy Forum, which is produced by Information Gatekeepers Inc., can be found at www.chinaconf.com .
"We are delighted that iBasis will address this year's China Telecom Forum. As a provider of international service to four of the top five Chinese carriers, including China Mobile, China Unicom, China Netcom, and Jitong Communications, iBasis long ago staked its claim as the leading international VoIP player in China. As such, they are able to offer a particularly compelling insider's view into the Chinese telecoms market and their experience provides an invaluable primer for success," said Dr. Hui Pan, Chief Economist, Information Gatekeepers Inc.
"Each time I visit China, I return convinced that the ultimate scale of this still nascent telecommunications market will dwarf all others. That is why we believe so strongly in China. Our relationships in that market continue to drive growth in our China revenues and traffic, both of which nearly doubled from the first quarter of 2001 to the first quarter of this year," said Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of iBasis. "By helping many of the major Chinese carriers improve the quality and efficiency of their international service and by establishing an extensive Chinese termination footprint, we have ourselves become a major carrier to China. We estimate that more than 20% of all the voice traffic from the United States to China travels over The iBasis NetworkTM."
